The mostly excellent visibility in the Red Sea provides sensational conditions for wide angle and fisheye photography. Despite heavy commercial fishing, there is still a considerable number of large fish.
Special mention should be made of the oceanic white-tip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus), in divers jargon called ‘longis’, which have already made the headlines at dive sites like the Brothers and Deadalus. Because of their pronounced curiosity combined with human misbehavior, there have unfortunately already been deaths from so-called ‘trial bites’. The actual cause of death was not the bite, but the blood loss caused by the injured arteries. At dive sites where encounters with these fantastic pelagic hunters are to be expected, the rules of behavior and safety regulations mentioned in the briefing MUST be observed. If further accidents occur, either the dive sites will be closed or, much worse, the sharks will be hunted and extincted!
